Low density polyethylene (LDPE), also known as high pressure polyethylene (LDPE), is the lightest variety of polyethylene resins. It is milky white, tasteless, odorless, nontoxic, and has no gloss on the surface. It has good softness, extensibility, electrical insulation, transparency, easy processing and certain air permeability. It has good chemical stability, alkali resistance and resistance to general organic solvents.

LDPE has the following characteristics:

(1) The film is microemulsion white transparent and soft. The strength is smaller than that of HDPE, and the impact strength is larger than that of HDPE.
(2) Cold resistance, low temperature resistance and high temperature resistance. The thicker film can withstand the sterilization process of 90 ºC hot water immersion.
(3) Good moisture resistance, stable chemical properties, insoluble in general solvents.
(4) It has great air permeability, so the storage period of its contents should not be too long when it is used as a food package that is easy to oxidize.
(5) The oil resistance is poor, and the product can be dissolved and expanded slowly. When the food containing oil is packaged, it will have a "La" taste after long storage.
(6) Long term exposure to ultraviolet radiation and heat will cause aging, affecting its physical and dielectric properties.
  1. The melting point is 110~115 ºC, and the processing temperature is 150~210 ºC. If it is in inert gas, the temperature can reach 300 ºC and is still stable. But the melt is easy to degrade when it contacts with oxygen.

Application scope of LDPE:
  1. It is applicable to the packaging of condiments, cakes, sugar, preserves, biscuits, milk powder, tea, fish floss and other food.
  2. Pharmaceutical packaging such as tablets and powders, and fiber products packaging such as shirts, clothing, knitted cotton products and chemical fiber products.
  3. Washing powder, detergent, cosmetics and other daily chemical products packaging.
Due to the poor mechanical properties of single-layer PE film, it is usually used as the inner layer of composite packaging bags, that is, the heat sealing substrate of multi-layer composite film.

The development trend of low density polyethylene production is mainly the large-scale production equipment, the improvement of process operating conditions and the development and application of new initiators.
