During the heat treatment of asphalt compounds, thermal condensation reaction occurs to generate anisotropic mesophase small spheres. The micron sized spherical carbon material formed by separating the mesophase small spheres from the asphalt matrix is called Mesocarbon microbeads. Mainly used as a negative electrode material for lithium-ion batteries.

As a negative electrode material, mesophase carbon microspheres have the following advantages:

1. Mesophase carbon microspheres are spherical particles that can be tightly packed to form high-density electrodes;
2. The mesophase carbon microspheres have a lower surface area, which reduces the skin reactions that occur during the charging and discharging process;
3. The internal crystal structure of mesophase carbon microspheres is arranged radially, which means that there are many exposed graphite crystal edges on their surface, allowing MCMB to charge and discharge at high current density;
4. By adjusting the preparation process and heat treatment conditions, the crystal structure of MCMB can be controlled to obtain the best performance material.
